The skin is the largest organ of a mammal’s body. The skin of a horse’s back, specifically, is extremely sensitive to pressure over the tissue associated with their spinal cord. This means a few things for horses with exceptionally sensitive backs:
They’re hard to shop for, and a sore or sensitive back can really reduce their comfort and performance abilities. Some horses can have intense allergic reactions to certain materials; others are prone to rashes and sores. A changing topline, arthritis, or conformation issues can easily cause discomfort.
