Let’s Talk Technical, featuring: the Calmatech pad

The skin is the largest organ of a mammal’s body. The skin of a horse’s back, specifically, is extremely sensitive to pressure over the tissue associated with their spinal cord. This means a few things for horses with exceptionally sensitive backs:

They’re hard to shop for, and a sore or sensitive back can really reduce their comfort and performance abilities. Some horses can have intense allergic reactions to certain materials; others are prone to rashes and sores. A changing topline, arthritis, or conformation issues can easily cause discomfort.

A horse’s comfort isn’t something you can opt out of. Your sensitive horse’s issues need particular attention and the highest standards. However, specialty equipment, vet treatments and missing out on training can also get frustrating and expensive. We make our Calmatech saddle pads just for that reason.

  • Ecogold’s Calmatech Saddle Pads use Calmatech™ Medical Fleece. It’s soft, fluffy, and soothing, which means that it reduces friction and pressure at points of contact- perfect for both sensitive skin and achy backs. Additionally, it’s hypoallergenic, so allergy-prone horses can ride comfortably and reaction-free.

  • Horses that are prone to sores and discomfort from long, sweaty rides need to be kept cool and dry. Calmatech Medical Fleece, which is the same grade of fleece used in hospitals to prevent bed sores in patients, wicks moisture and improves air circulation as your horse is working.

  • It has pockets! No, seriously. The Calmatech pad has Velcro pockets and comes with 3D spacers and a removable layer of 100% breathable open cell high impact foam. This enables the pad to be adjustable, which means that you’ll have the best possible saddle fit and significant impact protection.

  • The ergonomic design of the Calmatech pad offers high wither clearance and no extra foam on the flaps. This allows the rider to maintain close contact and a stable riding position without sacrificing the horse’s comfort, while also reducing saddle slippage.

  • The Calmatech saddle pad is easily washable. It can be popped into the washing machine as often as needed and air dried to be as good as new. When dealing with sensitive horses, this step is extra important; washing away dried sweat, dirt, and other irritants makes the difference between a comfortable ride and irritated skin.

Ecogold’s Technical Series offers solutions for common (or not so common) riding problems. Each blog explains the workings of our pads in-depth, helping you find the best fit for both you and your horse.
